Barcode not found – add a product manually
Last updated
Sometimes a barcode isn't in any source. Moveno then shows a not found screen with three choices, and lets you enter the product yourself — by hand, or by letting the AI read a photo of the label. From then on, Moveno recognizes that barcode instantly.
How it works
- When a barcode isn't recognized, choose one of the three options: Search by name, Enter manually, or Scan again.
- If you choose Enter manually, the nutrition editor opens.
- Optionally add a Product photo (take one or pick from your library): the front of the package, shown in the catalog after approval. It uploads in the background while you type.
- Enter the Product name (required) and Brand (optional).
- Choose the reference unit that matches the label: Per 100 g (default), Per 100 ml (drinks), or Per serving.
- Enter the nutrition values as printed on the label: calories, protein, carbs, fat, and optionally fiber, saturated fat, sugars, and salt. (Rather not type them? See Fill in faster: Scan label (AI) below.)
- Enter the consumption amount — how much you actually ate or drank (the g/ml unit follows the reference unit).
- Log the meal.
Fill in faster: Scan label (AI)
Don't want to retype the table? Let the AI read the label for you.
- In the nutrition editor, tap "Scan label (AI)".
- Take a photo of the nutrition table on the packaging (the table with "per 100 g", "per serving", and so on). That photo goes into its own slot: Label photo — for review only.
- The AI reads the table ("AI is reading the label…") and fills in the calories and macros for you automatically.
- Filled-in fields get a small "AI" marker. Always check the values against the label and adjust where needed — you stay in control.
- Add the product name and the consumption amount (those aren't in the table) and log the meal.
Good to know
- The scanned barcode is carried into the form, so the product is recognized instantly on future scans.
- The product name is required; the brand is optional but helps tell similar products apart.
- The reference unit must match the label (Per 100 g / Per 100 ml / Per serving), or the values will be off.
- Scan label (AI) uses the same AI photo processing as scanning your food. If you declined that permission earlier, Moveno asks once more — see Why photo scanning asks for AI permission.
- If the AI can't read the label (too blurry, or you're offline), you'll see "Label not readable — enter manually" and simply type it in yourself. The AI is a convenience, not a requirement.
- The product photo and the label photo are two separate slots. The Product photo is the front of the package and is the image shown in the catalog after approval. The Label photo — for review only is the shot of the nutrition table: Moveno uses it purely to check the values you entered, and it is never published. So you can add both, and the "Scan label (AI)" button stays available even once you have picked a product photo.
- After you log it, Moveno automatically creates a personal entry (so re-scanning finds it) and adds the product to a review queue for possible inclusion in the shared database.
- Enter manually is also reachable as a fallback from the No food detected photo screen and from Search by name — the "Scan label (AI)" button is there too.
Common questions
My product wasn't found. Use Enter manually to enter it from the label; it'll be recognized next time you scan it.
What does "Scan label (AI)" do? You take a photo of the nutrition table and the AI fills in the calories and macros for you. Fields with an "AI" marker are worth a quick check.
The AI filled something in wrong. Tap the field and correct it by hand — your value always overrides the AI's.
It couldn't read the label. Take a sharper photo, square-on to the table, or just enter the values manually.
Which reference unit do I pick? Match what the label prints (most use Per 100 g; drinks are often Per 100 ml).
Where do I add a product photo? It's the first optional field in the manual entry form: Product photo. The label photo is a separate slot and does not replace it.
