Why does Moveno ask permission before scanning food?
Last updated
The first time you take a photo of your food, Moveno asks a one-time permission to send that photo to external AI services for recognition. The choice is yours, and you can change it anytime.
What is this pop-up?
To recognize the food in your photo, Moveno sends the photo to external AI services, which work out the dishes, portions, calories, and macros. Because your photo leaves your device to do this, Moveno asks your permission once — the very first time you scan with a photo. You see a short sheet explaining what happens, with the choice to continue or decline.
- If you allow it, your photo is analyzed and you see the recognized items right away.
- If you decline, no photo is sent and nothing happens to your image.
You only give this permission once. After that, you scan normally without seeing the sheet again.
What happens to your photo
- The photo is used only to recognize your food — nothing else.
- Location data is stripped from the photo before it is analyzed.
- Your health data (weight, dietary filters, connected health app) is never sent to the AI services.
- Want to know exactly which providers process the photo and under what safeguards? That is in our privacy policy.
Turning permission off or on later
Your choice is not locked in. You manage it in Settings → Preferences → Privacy & data:
- Turn it off: photo scanning is blocked until you allow it again. No new photos are sent to the AI services.
- Turn it back on: you see the explanation once more to confirm, and then photo scanning works again.
This keeps you in control of whether your photos are sent for recognition.
Scanning without AI: barcode and search
If you turn the permission off, the rest of Moveno keeps working. Only scanning with a photo needs the AI. These ways to log food use no AI photo recognition and are always available:
- Scan a barcode — point at a product's barcode.
- Search by name — type a food's name.
- Add manually — enter a product yourself.
So you can always keep logging your meals, even with photo scanning turned off.
Common questions
Do I have to give permission to use Moveno? No. Only photo scanning asks for it. Barcode, search, and manual entry work without it.
Why doesn't the pop-up name the AI services? The sheet keeps it short and general. The full list of providers and safeguards is in our privacy policy.
I declined by accident — what now? Go to Settings → Preferences → Privacy & data and turn photo scanning on. You see the explanation once more, and then you can scan with photos again.
Are my old photos deleted if I turn it off? Turning it off only stops new photos from being sent. Meals and photos you saved earlier stay in your diary until you delete them yourself.
